Cooking and baking offer so many opportunities for learning - reading, maths, measurement, timing, creativity, science and even writing.
During this time of lockdown, children at New School will be gathering their favourite recipes, sharing them on here and creating a recipe book. On Friday afternoons we will all be baking in our own homes and then coming together for a short tea party on line - to connect and share what we have baked.
This week the recipe we are sharing to inspire some scrumptious baking for the afternoon is VANILLA ROSE CAKE.
Ingredients: 225g soft butter 225g caster sugar 275g self raising flour 2 tsps baking powder 4 eggs, beaten 2 tbsps milk 1 tsp vanilla 1 tsp ground cardamom
BUTTERCREAM 500g icing sugar 250g soft butter Small splash of red food colouring 1 tsp rosewater Milk to loosen if needed
METHOD Preheat oven to 160 degrees Grease a tray approx. 20 x 30cm Cream butter and sugar together until light and fluffy Stir in eggs Add vanilla Sift in flour and cardamom and fold gently Add milk to loosen the mixture slightly Pour into tray and bake for approx 35 mins
Loosen and leave to cool for a few minutes before turning out onto a wire rack Beat butter and icing sugar together before adding colouring and rose water Loosen with milk if too thick Spread generously and haphazardly over cooled cake
If you don't eat it all during our tea party, it will keep in an airtight container for up to 5 days
